The Conference to Consider and Adopt Proposed Amendments to the Convention on Supplementary Compensation for Nuclear Damage adopted by consensus an amendment that removes the requirement for States with no nuclear reactors to contribute public funds to the Convention.
The Conference was convened from 13 to14 January 2026 at IAEA Headquarters in Vienna, Austria, by the IAEA Director General, pursuant to Article XXIV of the Convention. “An aim of the Convention is to increase the amount of compensation available in the event of a nuclear incident through supplementary funds to be provided by its Contracting Parties,” said IAEA Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi when he opened the Conference. “In this context, this Conference now carried a clear mandate: to consider amending the provisions related to the supplementary international fund, in particular the formula for calculating contributions.”
