The Conference to Consider and Adopt Proposed Amendments to the Convention on Supplementary Compensation for Nuclear Damage was held from 13 to 14 January 2026 at IAEA Headquarters in Vienna, Austria.

The Conference was convened from 13 to 14 January 2026 at IAEA Headquarters in Vienna, Austria, by the IAEA Director General, pursuant to Article XXIV of the Convention.

On 14 January, the Conference adopted by consensus an amendment that removes the requirement for States with no nuclear reactors to contribute public funds to the Convention. The amendment will enter into force on the date when all Contracting Parties to the Convention, as of that date, have each deposited an instrument expressing their consent to be bound.

The Conference was attended by 71 officials from 11 Contracting Parties and 6 Observers, including four Signatories and two States that had participated in person in the Fifth Meeting of the Contracting Parties and Signatories to the Convention, held at IAEA Headquarters from 23 to 26 June 2025. The Conference elected James Bennett McRae of the United States of America as President, and Taro Hokugo of Japan and David Wilkinson of Canada as Vice-Presidents.

In 2024, the required number of one-third of Contracting Parties, pursuant to Article XXIV, requested the convening of this Conference for the limited purpose of considering amending the compensation amount referred to in Article III.1(b) of the Convention (i.e., concerning the supplementary international fund) by revising the portion of the formula for calculation of contributions set forth in Article IV.1(b) of the Convention.
