          Description

The objective of the CRP is to enhance Member States’ capabilities in assessing the long term environmental behaviour and potential biological impact of radioactive particles released to the environment.

          Objectives

Enhancing the Member States’ capabilities in assessing the long-term environmental behaviour and potential biological impact of radioactive particles.

          Specific Objectives

To systemize existing and to obtain novel data on the long-term environmental behaviour of radioactive particles (solubility in the soil, transfer to plants and animals)To suggest a classification of the radioactive particles for the purpose of radiation protection and remediation planningTo provide a link between nuclear sources, characteristics of radioactive particles and parameters characterising environmental behaviour of radionuclidesTo improve the approach for dose assessments to humans and biota for the environments contaminated by radioactive particlesTo identify relevant biological endpoints, reference organisms and approach for assessing biological effects of non-human species in areas affected by radioactive particlesTo perform exploratory research on the development of reference materials/samples for inter-calibration of techniques utilized for the characterization of radioactive particlesTo increase collaboration among analytical laboratories studying environmental impact of radioactive particlesTo foster a novel cross-sectorial collaboration between laboratories studying environmental impact of radioactive particles and radiobiological laboratories

          Impact

An impact of the CRP can be regarded as significant due to involvement of high-level expert work and data collection with global coverage across the studied situations: naturally occurring radionuclides and radioactive materials, nuclear legacy from incidents and accidents, radioactivity due to industrial and military activity as well as resources' exploration.

          Relevance

The CRP was well planned and designed, so all implemented and reported activities are highly relevant to the subject and significantly contribute to improvement of scientific evidence and knowledge on abundance, forms, properties and hazards associated with the particulate radioactive materials. The CRP allowed specialists from different countries to cooperate and to exchange knowledge, thus creating a substantial momentum for enhancing the studies at the global scale.
