IAEA organises biennial interlaboratory comparisons on the analysis of deuterium oxide by Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) spectrometry. This initiative supports quality-assured use of deuterium dilution techniques to assess body composition and breast milk intake.
Deuterium-enriched water samples are sent to participating laboratories free of charge. Laboratory results are submitted electronically for comparative analysis. The primary goal is to enable laboratories to self-assess their deuterium oxide measurements.
The next interlaboratory comparison will be conducted in 2027.
