Nuclear weapons tests dispersed radioactive elements in the environment. Releases from nuclear accidents such as those at the Chornobyl and Fukushima nuclear power plants also released radioactive material. In addition, radioactive material may be released during nuclear fuel cycle operations, including reactor and waste operations. Radioactive materials are used in industry, medicine, agriculture, research, education and are sometimes found in consumer products like smoke and fire detectors.
