New Research Project on Computer Security For Nuclear AI

          New Coordinated Research Project

Artificial intelligence applications in the nuclear world require advanced computer security frameworks to mitigate risks of cyber-attacks.

The IAEA has launched a new research project to enhance computer security for artificial intelligence systems that may be used in the nuclear sector. The project aims to strengthen computer security strategies to support the adoption of artificial intelligence-enabled technologies by nuclear facilities, including those for small modular reactors and other nuclear applications.

Artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) systems are being deployed across the nuclear industry, offering potential benefits such as improved operational efficiency and enhanced security measures, including for threat detection. However, these technologies also create new computer security concerns that require innovative solutions. Risks include manipulation of data or information being used to teach or run an AI system. Minimizing such risks will involve robust information security and ensuring it is being used correctly.

Harnessing AI Benefits and Minimizing Risks

“As nuclear facilities integrate AI systems, emerging computer security vulnerabilities require vigilance,” said Elena Buglova, Director of the IAEA’s Division of Nuclear Security. “This coordinated research project (CRP) will help develop capabilities to securely implement and operate AI systems in nuclear industry, harnessing its benefits and minimizing risks.”

The CRP on Enhancing Computer Security of Artificial Intelligence Applications for Nuclear Technologies aims to promote scientific research, international cooperation and technical exchange related to the secure implementation and operation of AI systems in the nuclear sector. It will focus on developing methodologies and frameworks to identify vulnerabilities, protection mechanisms and security controls for AI systems in nuclear technologies. The project will also develop AI-enabled security assessment tools and training frameworks to support human resources development.

          How to join this CRP

The CRP is open to research organizations from all IAEA member countries. Those interested in joining the CRP must submit their proposal by email, no later than 30 November 2025, to the IAEA’s Research Contracts Administration Section, using the appropriate template on the Coordinated Research Activities web portal. The IAEA encourages institutes to involve, to the extent possible, women researchers and young researchers in their proposals.

For further information related to this CRP, potential applicants should use the contact form on the CRP page.
