Framework for fusion: Insights from ITER and European Prospects for International Standards

At this event, the nuclear safety and radiation protection authorities from France (ASNR) and Germany (BMUKN), the ITER Organization, and the European Commission will share their experience of the regulatory framework regarding fusion. The presentations by France, Germany, the ITER Organization, IAEA and European Commission will provide different but complementary perspectives on the challenges of regulating fusion installations in terms of nuclear safety and radiation protection in France and Germany, based on concrete experience and outcomes of the safety demonstration strategy followed for ITER, and the ongoing work of a regulation-related research projects in Germany (“ReFus”). The choices of licensing roadmap implemented, using the flexibility and graded approach possible within the applicable French, German and European regulations, will also be covered. The presentations and discussions will aim to illustrate the real case of a large fusion facility as well as research facilities, and highlight the initiatives undertaken by IAEA with a view to establishing technical and regulatory standards that could apply to future fusion facilities. This event is organized by the European Commission, France, Germany and ITER.
