          IAEA Conference: Quality Assurance and New Techniques in Radiation Medicine

          IAEA and international experts will discuss " quality assurance for quality care" in diagnostic radiology, nuclear medicine and radiotherapy, with a special emphasis on new and emerging technologies, at a three-day conference next week in Vienna, Austria, entitled Quality Assurance and New Techniques in Radiation Medicine.

          IAEA Deputy Director General for Nuclear Sciences and Applications, Mr. Werner Burkart, and Deputy Director General for Technical Cooperation, Ms. Ana María Cetto, will open the conference.

          IAEA Addresses Safeguards Verification Challenges

          IAEA and international experts will discuss current and future challenges facing the nuclear verification regime next week at a five-day symposium entitled International Safeguards: Addressing Verification Challenges in Vienna, Austria, organized by the IAEA.

          IAEA Deputy Director General for Safeguards, Mr. Olli Heinonen, and Ms. Jill Cooley, Director of Concepts and Planning Division, will brief journalists about the symposium at a press briefing at 08:45 on Monday, 16 October, in Vienna.

          Press Conference: Nuclear Threat Initiative to Commit $ 50 Million to Future IAEA Fuel Bank

          Former US Senator and Nuclear Threat Initiative Co-Chairman Sam Nunn will hold a press conference in Vienna at 13:00, today, 19 September, to discuss the NTI′s USD 50 million commitment to create an IAEA nuclear fuel bank.

          The press conference will be held in Hall M of the Austria Center Vienna (ACV), along the sidelines of the IAEA′s 50th General Conference, entitled New Framework for the Utilization of Nuclear Energy: Assurances of Supply and Non-Proliferation.

          Press Arrangements for IAEA General Conference

          Senior representatives of the 140 member states of the International Atomic Energy Organization will meet at the Austria Centre in Vienna on Monday, 18 September, for the five-day IAEA annual General Conference to discuss major issues facing the organization. The meeting also marks the IAEA′s 50th anniversary and will include a special event on "New Framework for Assurances of Nuclear Supply and Non-Proliferation."

          Press Arrangements for IAEA Board of Governors Meeting, Starting 11 September 2006

          The IAEA Board of Governors will convene a regular meeting in the Agency′s Headquarters at 10:30 on Monday, 11 September 2006, in the IAEA Boardroom, C04, in the Vienna International Centre.

          Director General Mohamed ElBaradei will open the meeting with an introductory statement. His statement will be released to journalists after delivery and placed on the IAEA website at about 11:00 the same day.

          International Conference on Management of Spent Fuel from Nuclear Power Reactors

          The conference, organized by the IAEA in cooperation with the OECD Nuclear Energy Agency, will assess progress made in the safe and efficient management of spent fuel.

          There are more than 400 nuclear power reactors in operation in the world today. At many of them spent fuel is being stored for longer periods and in larger quantities than originally planned because steps towards reprocessing or disposal are being delayed.

          The disposal of radioactive waste remains one of the major obstacles to public support for nuclear power.
