Anita Nilsson, Head of the Office of Nuclear Security in the IAEA, will provide technical information about assistance requested by the Government of China for improving nuclear security at the Beijing Summer Olympic Games and take reporter′s questions.
The Agency, through the Office of Nuclear Security, is helping to enhance China′s capabilities for ensuring the nuclear security of the 2008 Olympic Games.

Workshop on Transport of Radioactive Materials Opens in Rome, Italy
A three-day IAEA organized workshop, in cooperation with the Italian Government, opened today in Rome to identify ways to remove obstacles that impede the transport of radioactive material - much of it used in critical medical procedures - among countries in the Mediterranean Basin. The meeting, in the APAT Auditorium, Via Curtatone 3, is open to the press.
The meeting is part of the IAEA′s response to reports of increasing numbers of incidents of radioactive material being denied shipment by carriers.

Nuclear Safety Convention Review Opens 14 April
Three separate safety-related meetings at the IAEA will focus on the safety of nuclear installations, starting tomorrow, 9 April.
The International Nuclear Safety Group (INSAG) starts a three-day meeting tomorrow. An advisory body comprised of 17 renowned nuclear experts from industry, academia and regulatory organizations, INSAG′s aim is to highlight current and emerging safety issues related to the operation of nuclear installations.

The IAEA Board of Governors will convene a regular meeting at the Agency′s Headquarters at 10:30 on Monday, 3 March 2008, in the IAEA Boardroom, C04, in the Vienna International Centre.

Q: How far have IAEA inspectors come in verifying outstanding issues? MOHAMED ELBARADEI, DIRECTOR GENERAL, IAEA: Our task in Iran is to make sure that the Iranian nuclear programme is exclusively for peaceful purposes. We are at it for the last five years. In the last four months, in particular, we have made quite good progress in clarifying the outstanding issues that had to do with Iran′s past nuclear activities, with the exception of one issue, and that is the alleged weaponization studies that supposedly Iran has conducted in the past.

A team of IAEA experts is visiting South Africa at the invitation of the Government to exchange views on the lessons learned from an incident on 8 November 2007, when armed men broke into the Pelindaba nuclear facility of the South African Nuclear Energy Corporation (NECSA).
In issuing the invitation at the November meeting of the IAEA Board of Governors, South Africa said that the exchange could also benefit other IAEA Member States in the "implementation of their nuclear security policies and the improvement of relevant guidelines".
