69th IAEA General Conference

The Incident and Emergency Centre (IEC) is the global focal point for international preparedness for and response to nuclear or radiological emergencies. The tour will provide participants with an overview of the IEC’s response roles and emergency preparedness and response tools.

Tours will be offered on Tuesday 16, Wednesday 17 and Thursday 18 September from 1.00 p.m. to 2.00 p.m. The planned duration of each tour is one hour.

Advance registration is encouraged by sending an email, stating first and family name, affiliation, delegation, email and telephone number. The assembly point is the Information Desk at the entrance to the M building from where participants will be picked up on the respective day at 12.50 p.m.

Visitors to the IAEA’s Isotope Hydrology Laboratory in the VIC will be shown laboratory facilities that support Member States in the application of nuclear and nuclear-related techniques for the isotopic analysis of water samples.

This tour will include the tritium and noble gas facilities for age dating groundwaters and the laser lab where stable oxygen and hydrogen isotopes are analysed to provide information about the hydrological cycle.

This event will involve a guided tour of the Nuclear Security Training and Demonstration Centre (NSTDC) at the IAEA Seibersdorf Laboratories on Thursday, 18 September 2025, from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.

This event’s objective is to explain the unique roles, ways of operation, methods of work and areas of common interest of each organization, their interaction of the three and distinct operational mandates.

The three international organisations UNSCEAR, ICRP and IAEA work in their respective domain and mandate, and the outcome of their efforts constitute the radiological protection and safety foundation all over the world. This event is organized by Belgium.

This side event will showcase studies made under the Atoms4NetZero initiative, modelling the role of nuclear power, for electricity generation but also heat supply. Case studies of energy transition scenarios will be presented using the IAEA supply optimisation tool MESSAGE, for two Member States, China (collaboration with CINIS) and Estonia (collaboration with the University of Tartu). Insights on the contribution of large reactors and small modular reactors to secure and clean energy transitions, will be discussed.

A side event at the 69th IAEA General Conference will showcase how initiatives such as the International Nuclear Science Olympiad (INSO) and other innovative competitions inspire the next generation to pursue careers in nuclear science and technology. The event will feature keynote addresses, panel discussions, and interactive exchanges, highlighting success stories from around the world.

The event will also spotlight pioneering efforts from the African region to engage more female students in nuclear science and technology (NST), serving as a model for other regions. Special segments will include the award ceremony recognizing winning students from Africa, as well as the handover of the INSO globe to the host country of INSO 2026, symbolizing the continued legacy of international collaboration and youth engagement in nuclear science. Discussions will explore how such platforms promote inclusivity, foster collaboration, cultivate critical thinking, and ignite innovation among youth worldwide.

This event involves a laboratory tour (to be offered on three consecutive days). The tour will showcase the Radiation Safety Technical Services Laboratory, which provides annual monitoring services for external and internal radiation exposure for 3000 occupationally exposed workers. These services are critical to IAEA activities globally. Support services also include training, consultation and the loan of survey equipment.

Advanced SMRs, including both GEN III+ and GEN IV designs that offer intrinsic safety features and improved fuel performance, are under consideration or development in several countries. However, their “fleet mode” deployment hinges on (1) robust government-private sector partnership including across industrial, hyperscalers, and traditional end-users, (2) supportive federal and local government policies, and (3) strategic international supply chain networks. This panel discussion will address lessons learned from prior projects, as well as the challenges and opportunities confronting advanced reactor developers and end-users. This seminar provides a comprehensive exploration of how Naturally Occurring Radioactive Material (NORM) residues can be managed through circular economy principles. As global efforts intensify to reduce waste, enhance sustainability, and secure critical materials, this seminar addresses the technical, regulatory, and strategic dimensions of integrating NORM residues into circular value chains. This event is organized by Portugal.

This event will spotlight the IAEA's recent efforts on safety for Transportable Nuclear Power Plants (TNPPs). It will provide an overview of current safety approaches and practices used by various stakeholders in Member States, such as designers and regulators, and outline future plans for IAEA activities in this field. The event will offer a forum to discuss the challenges and needs related to TNPP safety in Member States.

This event will enable discussions by the national representatives of the Regional Co-operative Agreement for Research, Development and Training Related to Nuclear Science and Technology (RCA). Participants will review the achievements of the agreement in 2023 and approve activities for 2025.

The IAEA’s new Transportable Electron Beam (e-beam) Accelerator System?is a versatile facility that allows the treatment of liquids, solids and gases. It will be a cornerstone of the Agency’s assistance to Member States in building capacity and in bridging gaps to address the need for cost-effective and accessible e-beam technology (“ebeams4Development”). The system will enable experts to conduct activities that support NUTECPlastics (polymer modification), Atoms4Food (phyto- and sanitary application), ZODIAC (inactivating microorganisms for vaccine production), Atoms4Climate (environmental applications such as wastewater, sludge, odour and greenhouse gases treatments), Atoms4Heritage (preserving heritage artefacts) and more.

The 40-feet ISO container in Agency blue, housing the main element of the system, will be on display at A-3 level. Experts will brief delegates about its capabilities, operation, safety aspects and the possibilities for loaning the system to Member States for dedicated experiments and demonstration. The system will not be operational while on display at the VIC (i.e. no radiation protection measures are needed).

Daily, between 08:00-09:00 and 13:00-15:00, no registration required.

At this event, the role of the Forum of Nuclear Regulatory Bodies in Africa (FNRBA), African Regional Cooperative Agreement for Research, Development and Training related to Nuclear Science and Technology (AFRA), and African Commission on Nuclear Energy (AFCONE) in ensuring and implementing nuclear and radiological safety and security and nuclear safeguards in Africa will be highlighted. Further, the implementation of the Rays of Hope in Africa will be discussed. The event seeks to explore integration opportunities towards achieving their respective goals. This event is organized by Ghana.

The IAEA Archives are a pillar of the IAEA’s institutional memory, spanning over 70 years and comprising over 10 000 shelf metres of hard-copy records and 10 terabytes of data. These walking tours are an opportunity to look behind the scenes to:

• Experience the size and composition of the IAEA Archives;
• Interact with some of the treasures in our holdings and be inspired by the Agency’s history;
• View the Reading Room and an archival repository, and learn about challenges in preservation and access management; and
• Hear how the Department of Management oversees the IAEA Archives.
