Webinar on the Convention on the Physical Protection of Nuclear Material (CPPNM) and its Amendment
Description
While progress is being made globally to secure nuclear and other radioactive material, countries continue to report incidents of theft, losses, illicit trafficking and other unauthorized activities involving the material. On 8 May 2016, we reached a major milestone in strengthening security of nuclear material worldwide: the Amendment to the Convention on the Physical Protection of Nuclear Material (CPPNM) entered into force. Universal adherence to and effective implementation of the CPPNM and its Amendment will enhance protection of nuclear material and nuclear facilities around the world and strengthen nuclear security nationally, regionally, and globally.
The CPPNM establishes legal obligations for Parties regarding the physical protection of nuclear material used for peaceful purposes during international transport; the criminalization of certain offences; and international co-operation. The Amendment extends the scope of the original treaty to cover physical protection of nuclear facilities and nuclear material used for peaceful purposes in domestic use, storage and transport. It also adds criminal offenses related to illicit trafficking and sabotage of nuclear material or a nuclear facility, as well as provides for strengthened international co-operation.
The webinar will focus on the scope, obligations, and the benefits of joining the CPPNM and its Amendment. Several States will share their view and experiences adhering to and implementing the Amendment to the CPPNM. IAEA will share information about the legislative and technical assistance available to Member States, upon request, to facilitate a State’s adherence to and implementation of the CPPNM and its Amendment.
