          History of OSART missions

The IAEA created the Operational Safety Review Team (OSART) programme in 1982 soon after the 1979 accident at the Three Mile Island nuclear power plant, at a time when several nuclear power plants were beginning operation and the industry was recognizing the importance of achieving high standards of operational safety and reliability. The first OSART mission was conducted in August 1983 at the Kori nuclear power plant in the Republic of Korea.

In 1989, follow-up visits became a standard feature of the OSART programme, and as of September 2024, 164 such missions had been held. The follow-up visits review improvements in operational safety which have taken place in response to the findings from the initial mission.
