          European Radiation Dosimetry Group (EURADOS)

          History

40 years ago, EURADOS was registered in the Netherlands in 1981. In 1992, the first research project was funded as part of the 3rd Framework Programme EURATOM. On the Annual Meeting in 1999, the first Working Group was created dedicated on the development of EURADOS. The first website of EURADOS was created in 2001. In 2008, EURADOS has been entered into the Register of Associations in Germany and its structure was fixed by a new Constitution. In 2018, the EURADOS Office moved from Braunschweig to Munich. The current Constitution and updated Rules of Procedure have been approved in 2021. EURADOS Chairpersons:

          1982-1992: John Dennis, UK

          1992-2001: Günther Dietze, Germany

          2001-2004: Pascal Pihet, France

          2004-2014: Helmut Schuhmacher, Germany

          2014-2020: Werner Rühm, Germany

          2020-Present: Filip Vanhavere, Belgium

          Objectives

The European Radiation Dosimetry Group (EURADOS) serves the promotion of research and development and European cooperation in the field of the dosimetry of ionising radiation.

The main objectives of this permanent network of experts, and reference laboratories in radiation protection, retrospective dosimetry, individual and environmental radiation monitoring, radiobiology, and diagnostic and therapeutic applications of radiation in medicine.

The aims of EURADOS are in particular:

? ? (a) to advance the scientific understanding related to the dosimetry of ionising radiation.

? ? (b) to promote the technical development of dosimetric methods and instrumentation and their implementation in routine dosimetry.

? ? (c) to contribute to the compatibility of the dosimetric procedures used within the EU and their conformance with international practices.

? ? (d) to stimulate scientific collaboration and the dissemination of results between European laboratories and the active co-operation with other similar associations in neighbouring areas.

? ? (e) to maintain active links and exchange with the broader community of international dosimetry laboratories.

The aims are achieved by maintaining a network which includes experts, reference laboratories, research laboratories, and dosimetry services, to enable appropriate specialist groups to be formed in a timely manner to solve problems or promote research identified within EURADOS or upon request from external bodies. The principal activities encompass Working Group (WG) coordination, organisation of scientific meetings and training activities, intercomparison exercises, benchmark studies, webinars and management of databases and web sites. The results of the activities are published in EURADOS Reports and in the open literature.

          Management

          EURADOS is composed of:

          • 80 Voting Members (status May 2021), i.e. selected European institutions involved in performing or promoting scientific research in radiation dosimetry.
          • more than 600 Associate Members, who contribute to the activities as individual scientists from European countries.
          • and 4 Honorary Members, individual scientists who have made outstanding contributions to the realisation of the aims of EURADOS.

          Products

As part of its working group activities and the Annual Meeting (AM), the key event of the network, EURADOS organises periodically:

          • Winter Schools

in order to respond to the need for training in the field of radiation dosimetry, EURADOS Winter Schools were included in our Annual Meetings.
            ?

          • Scientific Meetings of the Working Groups

            WG2: Harmonisation of individual monitoring
            WG3: Environmental dosimetry
            WG6: Computational dosimetry
            WG7: Internal dosimetry
            WG9: Radiation dosimetry in radiotherapy
            WG10: Retrospective dosimetry
            WG11: High energy radiation fields
            WG12: Dosimetry in medical imaging
            ?

          • Intercomparison Exercises

More than 30 Intercomparisons have already been organised on topics ranging from or extremity dosimeters, eye lens dosimeters for medical applications, whole body photon dosimeters on Monte Carlo-modeling for the in-vivo monitoring of 241Am in skull phantoms, early warning dosimetry network systems, passive area dosemeters, whole body neutron dosimeters and whole body photon dosimeters.
            ?

          • Training Courses

Training Courses in order to respond to the need for training in the field of radiation dosimetry.
            ?

          • Webinars

Since 2020, EURADOS holds a series of webinars with the aim of a better and wider dissemination of the scientific results of its Working Groups.
            ?
