No Immediate Y2K Implications for Safety of Nuclear Power Plants

As at 10.30 UTC on 1 January 2000, all countries operating nuclear power plants have confirmed to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) that no incident with implications for safety had occurred at any nuclear power plant as a result of the immediate transition to the year 2000.

The Director General of the IAEA, Mohamed ElBaradei, welcomed the cooperation of those countries in keeping the Agency's Emergency Response Centre, and through it IAEA Member States, informed of developments during this period. He said that preparations over the past years for Y2K rollover at both the national and international levels had underlined the value of international cooperation in the nuclear field.

He emphasized the importance of Member States continuing their efforts to track any problems which might occur relating to the rollover period in all fields of nuclear application.
