The IAEA strives to help the Member States, especially countries that are considering and planning for their first nuclear power plant, with development of an appropriate infrastructure and capacity to support the successful introduction of nuclear power.
Safety assessment is a critical success factor for the demonstration of safety and the NPP licensing and commissioning process. Therefore, the development of national safety assessment knowledge and capabilities is essential as soon as a serious decision for developing a nuclear programme is taken. Education and training on nuclear safety assessment is a key element for both maintaining competence and developing the necessary infrastructure for the nuclear renaissance.
In support of providing education and training resources to Member States, the IAEA has been developing the Global Nuclear Safety Assessment Network (GSAN), as well as the Safety Assessment Education and Training (SAET) programme. Both GSAN and SAET provide specific support in safety assessment to MS developing or enhancing nuclear power programmes.
Objective
Utilizing the GSAN and SAET programmes, support Member States in enhancing their safety assessment capabilities for present and future generations of nuclear systems, with special focus on countries with developing nuclear technology and nuclear safety infrastructure. In addition, this project provides assistance for specific topics such as the Zwentendorf nuclear power plant walk-down course, as well as others.
