          Description

Plasma science and technology are undergoing a period of significant growth, supported by advances in plasma sources, high-precision diagnostics, modelling capabilities, and computational tools. Recent progress in measurement techniques and simulation frameworks is enabling a more detailed understanding of plasma processes, improving control strategies, and enhancing predictive performance. The increasing integration of artificial intelligence and machine learning into plasma research and engineering is further accelerating these developments, contributing to real-time process optimization, improved system design, and enhanced operational reliability. As a result of these advancements, plasma is becoming a versatile tool for scientific and technological innovation across multiple sectors and can play an expanding role in addressing global challenges in agriculture, health, water, and environmental sustainability. The continued evolution of plasma applications is inherently interdisciplinary, drawing on expertise from physics, chemistry, materials science, biology and medicine. This convergence is opening new pathways for the development of plasma-based solutions across a broad range of societal, environmental and industrial areas. At the same time, the field faces ongoing challenges related to the standardization of diagnostic and modelling techniques, reproducibility of experiments, and the scalability of laboratory results to industrial implementation. To support Member States in addressing these challenges, the IAEA has established a five-year Coordinated Research Project for the period 2025–2030 on Advancement of Plasma Science, Technology and Applications. The CRP seeks to strengthen international collaboration, facilitate the exchange of knowledge and best practices, and promote the development and validation of scalable plasma technologies. It will also encourage harmonization of diagnostic and modelling approaches, foster data sharing among participating laboratories, and support joint efforts to improve the reliability, comparability and reproducibility of plasma research outcomes.Overall Objective:To advance fundamental plasma science, optimize plasma technologies, and support the translation of plasma research into practical applications for societal, environmental and industrial benefit.

          Objectives

To advance fundamental plasma science, optimize plasma technologies, and support the translation of plasma research into practical applications for societal, environmental and industrial benefit.

          Specific Objectives:

          1) (WP1) Advancing fundamental interfacial plasma science: Understanding of interfacial plasma (plasma-liquid, plasma-biological, plasma-material interactions, etc) through experiments, modelling and simulations
          2) (WP2) Optimizing Plasma Processes for Different Plasma Applications: To enhance performance, energy efficiency, scalability, and reproducibility of plasma devices and processes. To integrate artificial intelligence/machine learning (AI/ML) and smart sensors with plasma devices and processes.
          3) (WP3) Bridging the Research and Development to Deployment Gap: To advance technology readiness level (TRL) of plasma systems and processes. To develop and advance prototype or pilot-scale plasma systems for real-world applications
          4) (WP4) Education, Training and Outreach on Plasma Science and Technology: To facilitate global collaboration between academia, industry, and governments. To facilitate education and training on plasma science and technology. Public outreach for promoting awareness about the use and benefits of plasma technologies
