In force since 1996, the Convention on Nuclear Safety (CNS) represents a legal commitment by the Contracting Parties to ‘achieve and maintain a high level of nuclear safety worldwide’. The CNS is an ‘incentive’ convention, prioritizing consensus and participation. The CNS provides for the ‘Meetings of the Contracting Parties’, which include Review Meetings.  In accordance with Article 21(3) of the Convention on Nuclear Safety (CNS), Review Meetings are held every three years. In accordance with Article 20 of the CNS, Review Meetings provide the opportunity to review the National Reports of all Contracting Parties on the implementation of their obligations under the CNS.

In accordance with Rule 7 of the Rules of Procedure and Financial Rules (INFCIRC/573/Rev. 8), each Contracting Party participating in the Review Meeting shall be represented by one delegate, who may be accompanied by such alternate representatives, experts and advisers, as required. The Review Meeting consists of three main parts: the Opening Plenary Session, the Country Group Sessions and the Final Plenary Session. The languages of the Plenary Sessions of the Review Meetings are Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian and Spanish.

The Tenth Review Meeting of the Contracting Parties to the CNS will take place from 13 to 24 April 2026. Details of the previous Review Meetings, as well as more information on the CNS, can be found here.
