          Background

It is estimated that worldwide, more than 20 million shipments of radioactive material take place every year to meet the growing demand for the peaceful uses of nuclear technology. Nuclear and other radioactive material is potentially vulnerable to security threats during transport, and the IAEA assists governments and stakeholders to implement and maintain national nuclear security regimes that include concrete measures for transport security.

The IAEA's Nuclear Security Series provides international consensus guidance on all aspects of nuclear security to support States as they work to fulfil their responsibility for nuclear security.

Within the framework of a series of webinars highlighting the relevant IAEA Nuclear Security Series (NSS) publications that assist States in the technical implementation of the Convention on the Physical Protection of Nuclear Material (CPPNM) and its 2005 Amendment — this webinar will focus specifically on NSS No. 26-G “Security of Nuclear Material in Transport.”

          Objectives

The objectives of the webinar are:
? To present roles and responsibilities for Member States in the area of transport security, pursuant to the CPPNM and its Amendment.
? To provide an overview of NSS No. 26-G “Security of Nuclear Material in Transport”, and describe how it supports the technical implementation of the CPPNM and its Amendment.
? To inform Member States of the available resources and assistance provided by the IAEA in the field of transport security.
