          Background

The Safety Requirements on Preparedness and Response for a Nuclear or Radiological Emergency (IAEA Safety Standards Series No. GSR Part 7) was published in 2015 under the joint sponsorship of 13 international intergovernmental organizations. Requirements 7 and 8 of this publication require governments to ensure that arrangements are in place for both identification and notification as well as taking mitigatory actions in a nuclear or radiological emergency. These requirements apply to research reactors in both EPC II and III. With the guidance established in EPR-Research Reactors (2011), arrangements for emergency response to nuclear emergencies at research reactors are clear in terms of response roles and functions in both preparedness and response.

The webinar will provide an overview of the different emergency preparedness categories of research reactors and the emergency preparedness and response measures necessary as described in the publication EPR-Research Reactors. This webinar is aimed at professionals with relevant authorities related to emergency planning at research reactors or with responsibilities in preparing for, and responding to, a nuclear or security related emergency at national, regional, local levels or at the facility level. This includes decision makers, emergency planners, qualified experts (e.g. reactor supervisors, radiological assessors, technical advisers to decision makers) and relevant staff of different response organizations and other interested parties.

          Objectives

The objectives of the Webinar are:

          • Emergency Response Process and Priorities
          • Roles in emergency response
          • Assessment and Classification

          Target Audience

The Webinar is open to professionals with relevant authorities related to emergency planning at research reactors or with responsibilities in preparing for, and responding to, a nuclear or security related emergency at national, regional, local levels or at the facility level. Examples include decision makers, emergency planners, qualified experts (e.g. reactor supervisors, radiological assessors, technical advisers to decision makers) and relevant staff of different response organizations.
