Artificial Intelligence and the IAEA
Secretariat Side Events
The use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) is rapidly evolving and growing in all spheres of life – science and technology are no exception. The Agency has been participating in the high-level dialogue on the use of AI within the UN System and closely liaising with the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) in the “AI for Good” platform, which is organized by ITU in partnership with IAEA and 40 other UN System organizations. The IAEA has also been following up the direction the nuclear sector is taking in seizing the broad opportunities that AI offers. While AI can bring great applied benefits, it can also present challenges due to its associated risks and ethical concerns. The appropriate integration of AI in the nuclear domain in full compliance with the safety, security and non-proliferation principles is of great interest to the IAEA.
At the side event, the IAEA Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi and ITU Deputy Secretary-General Tomas Lamanauskas will deliver opening remarks reflecting on their expectations from the enhanced cooperation. Opening statements will be followed by a high-level technical session featuring experts’ presentations on how AI is being adopted in some of the niche areas of radiation medicine, the nuclear power sector, and on the regulatory approach when using AI at industrial scale, as well as the expected role of the Agency in this regard.
This event will be held on Thursday, 28 September 2023, from 10.00 a.m. to 11.15 a.m. in Conference Room CR7, C Building, seventh floor.
