In 2005, the adoption of both the Amendment to the Convention on the Physical Protection of Nuclear Material (CPPNM) under the auspices of the IAEA and the International Convention for the Suppression of Acts of Nuclear Terrorism (ICSANT) under the auspices of the United Nations and under the chairmanship of Morocco of the Sixth Committee of the 59th Session of the UN General Assembly, marked significant milestones in strengthening the international legal framework for nuclear security. Both instruments remain key to international efforts to prevent acts of nuclear terrorism. This side event will mark the 20th anniversary of the adoption of the Amendment to the CPPNM and ICSANT by highlighting their continued importance and complementarities, the work that still needs to be done to achieve universal adherence and full implementation, and the support provided by the IAEA, UNOCT and UNODC to this end. This event is organized jointly by the Kingdom of Morocco, the IAEA, the United Nations Office of Counter-Terrorism, and the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime.
