          Description

This webinar is the second in Part 1 of the IAEA webinar series on Nuclear Technology Breakthroughs for the 21st Century.

There is a consensus among stakeholders involved in decision making in nuclear energy sector that SMRs are good candidates for the expected large replacement of baseload electricity generation plants and are to play an integral role with the variable renewables to mitigate their negative impacts on the grid. Their advantages include the adaptability for flexible operation; enhanced safety performance through their inherent and passive safety features; lower upfront capital cost; suitability for cogeneration and non-electric applications; and possibilities for synergetic hybridization with renewable energy systems.

The webinar will provide the audience not only with insights in the technology, economics and deployment opportunities, buts also the utility perspective to deploy SMRs in different scenarios in the near future. These could be to replace fossil fuel plants, for smaller grids, or remote communities. The speakers will highlight the absolute necessity for flexible, integrated, on demand electricity generation resources to support the increased deployment of intermittent renewables and how SMRs can fulfil this need. Cogeneration as an optimal way to implement SMRs in integrated energy systems, for electricity, heat and many other products, will be explained.
