Technical Meeting on Experiences with the Implementation of the Bonn Call for Action

          5 – 7 Mar 2018
          Vienna, Austria

In 2012, in Bonn, Germany, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) organized the International Conference on Radiation Protection in Medicine — Setting the Scene for the Next Decade. This conference, which was co-sponsored by the World Health Organization (WHO), resulted in the ‘Bonn Call for Action’ — a joint IAEA–WHO position statement setting forth ten key actions, identifying responsibilities and proposing priorities, for all parties to consider in relation to radiation protection in medicine for the next ten years. In 2017, in Vienna, the IAEA organized the International Conference on Radiation Protection in Medicine: Achieving Change in Practice, at which participants had the opportunity to take stock of the global progress made in implementing the Bonn Call for Action and proposed the creation of a ‘Bonn Call for Action Implementation Toolkit’.

With the development of the Bonn Call for Action Implementation Toolkit launched as a result of the 2017 International Conference, new and existing implementation resources, created by both the IAEA and other organizations, will be shared with organizations and individuals in countries around the world for their immediate use. The availability of these resources, e.g. electronic tools, guidance texts or training material on radiation protection in medicine, will be reviewed for potential inclusion in the Bonn Call for Action Implementation Toolkit in order to help strengthen radiation protection and safety in medicine and keep both patients and health professionals safe.
