UNMOVIC IAEA Press Statement on Inspection Activities in Iraq, 2 February 2003

2 February 2003 -- UNMOVIC sought another private interview with an Iraqi individual. This individual made the appointment but declined to be interviewed without a witness being present. The interview did not proceed.
An UNMOVIC missile team inspected the Al-Samoud Factory, approximately 40 km west of Baghdad. The site is dedicated to producing components and final assembly of the Al-Samoud missiles.
A second UNMOVIC missile team traveled 40 km south of Baghdad to visit the Al Meelad Military Research and Development Company, which specializes in the design and development of missile guidance and control systems. The team addressed questions concerning the status of the guidance and control development programmes to the technical staff at the facility. In addition, the team obtained clarifications on the declaration of January 2003 for the site.
An UNMOVIC joint missile and multi-disciplinary team traveled to Al Qa Qaa State Company, approximately 60 km southwest of Baghdad, and inspected the Nitric Acid Factory.
An UNMOVIC chemical team visited the Al-Warda Store, 30 km south of Baghdad, which belongs to the Baghdad Water Supply Authority. The team conducted a re-baselining inspection of the facility.
An UNMOVIC joint biological team and multi-disciplinary team inspected the Al-Numan Factory in central Baghdad. The team took some samples for analysis. A second biological team inspected the State Enterprise for Dairy Products, located about 35 km west of Baghdad. This site produces a range of dairy products and is one of the largest of its kind in Iraq.
Two IAEA teams flew by helicopter to the Akashat Phosphate Mine in western Iraq. One team met the facility staff and inspected the area around the mine. The second team performed a mobile radiation survey.
