The IAEA will hold a two-day Conference from 21-22 September in Vienna next week focusing on the escalating rates of cancer and a growing need for qualified staff and radiotherapy equipment in developing countries. Entitled Cancer in Developing Countries: Facing the Challenge, the event will bring together policy-makers, health-care experts, and dignitaries to discuss the public health challenge that cancer poses to low- and middle-income countries. The Conference will begin each day at 10:00 a.m. in Conference Room E2 of the Austria Center.
The event is this year′s Scientific Forum, an annual conference that coincides with the IAEA General Conference. Each year, the Scientific Forum concentrates on a different topic.
IAEA Director General Yukiya Amano will open the Conference.
Notable participants and speakers include:
- First Lady of Egypt, Mrs. Susanne Mubarak;
- First Lady of South Africa, Mrs. Tobeka Zuma;
- First Lady of Mongolia, Mrs. Khajidsuren Bolormaa
- World Health Organization Director General Margaret Chan (via video message);and
- Special Envoy of the French Government, Mr. Claude Birraux
Internationally renowned journalist Nik Gowing will moderate the conference. Prominent scientists and public health leaders from national cancer societies, cancer control organizations and international bodies including the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) and the International Union Against Cancer (UICC) will take part in the event.
The meeting is open to press and the general public.
