IAEA Director General Report on Iran Nuclear Verification Sent to Agency's Board
IAEA Director General Mohamed ElBaradei this week circulated his latest report on the Agency's nuclear verification in Iran to the IAEA's Member States. The 35-member IAEA Board of Governors will consider the report at its next meetings beginning in Vienna 25 November. Unless the IAEA Board decides otherwise, the document’s circulation is restricted and it cannot be released to the public.

The Conference is co-sponsored by the Government of the United States of America and the Government of the Russian Federation.

A meeting of the IAEA Board of Governors will commence on Monday, 13 September 2004 at 10.30 a.m. and is expected to last at least three days. The Board will discuss, among other issues, measures to strengthen international co-operation in nuclear, radiation and transport safety and waste management; progress on measures to protect against nuclear terrorism; and strengthening the Agency’s activities related to nuclear science, technology and applications.

A meeting of the IAEA Board of Governors will commence on Monday, 14 June 2004 at 10.30 a.m. and is expected to last at least three days. The Board will discuss, among other issues, the annual Technical Cooperation Report; Measures to strengthen International Cooperation in Nuclear, Radiation, and Transport Safety and Waste Management; and a new Programme of Action for Cancer Therapy.

"The Islamic Republic of Iran has on 21 May delivered to the IAEA the initial declaration under the Additional Protocol to its NPT safeguards agreement. This declaration should provide broader information about Iran's nuclear and nuclear-related activities and will facilitate the IAEA's assessment of the correctness and completeness of the information already provided by Iran on its past and present nuclear activities.
The Director General will be providing his next report to the Board of Governors on the progress of that assessment later this month."

IAEA Director General ElBaradei will be visiting Israel sometime in the summer, though details have not been finalized.
Israel is a Member State of the IAEA and it is six years since he was last there. He would intend to use such a trip to consult on his mandate from the IAEA General Conference to promote non-proliferation and a nuclear weapon-free zone in the Middle East, as well as to discuss bilateral cooperation in nuclear sciences and applications.

"I was informed this morning by the Iranian authorities that a new date for the next round of IAEA inspections would be 27 March, 2004.
Although the delay is regrettable, it is nonetheless still within our time schedule for conducting inspections.
I hope and trust there will be no future delay with respect to any future inspections in Iran.
It is clearly in the interest of Iran to cooperate fully with the IAEA and adopt a policy of proactive cooperation so that the IAEA can clarify outstanding issues as early as possible."

IAEA Director General Mohamed ElBaradei will travel to Washington next week for working meetings with senior US government officials, likely including President Bush. The purpose of the trip is to discuss current efforts to strengthen the nuclear non-proliferation regime.

There will be a ceremonial signing of the Safeguards Additional Protocol between IAEA's Director General, Mohamed ElBaradei, and H.E. Engineer Matooq Mohamed Matooq, Assistant Secretary for Services Affairs of the General People's Committee of the Socialist People's Libyan Arab Jamahiria today, Wednesday, 10 March at 13.00.
The ceremony is open to the press.
