Press Arrangements for 54th IAEA General Conference
Representatives from the 151 member states of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) will meet at the VIC on Monday, 20 September, for the five-day IAEA annual General Conference to discuss major topics on the organization's agenda.
All plenary sessions of the General Conference and the Scientific Forum will be open to the press. They will also be streamed live through the IAEA website.
The Scientific Forum on 21 and 22 September is entitled Cancer in Developing Countries: Facing the Challenge. It will be held at the Austria Center Vienna (ACV).

The IAEA will hold a two-day Conference from 21-22 September in Vienna next week focusing on the escalating rates of cancer and a growing need for qualified staff and radiotherapy equipment in developing countries. Entitled Cancer in Developing Countries: Facing the Challenge, the event will bring together policy-makers, health-care experts, and dignitaries to discuss the public health challenge that cancer poses to low- and middle-income countries. The Conference will begin each day at 10:00 a.m. in Conference Room E2 of the Austria Center.

The IAEA Board of Governors will convene a regular meeting at the Agency′s headquarters starting at 10:30 a.m. CET on Monday, 13 September 2010, in Boardroom A of the M-Building, in the Vienna International Centre (VIC).
Director General Yukiya Amano will open the meeting with an introductory statement. His statement will be released to journalists after delivery and posted on the IAEA website the same day. DG Amano is also expected to hold a press conference on Monday, 13 September 2010, at 2:30 p.m.

Across the developing world, cancer is on the rise. Once thought of as a "rich world" disease, cancer is a looming public health catastrophe across low- and middle-income countries.
The IAEA is working to make radiotherapy accessible in such settings, and has challenged the makers of radiotherapy equipment to lower the prohibitive costs of the technology to increase access in developing countries.

"The International Atomic Energy Agency can confirm that on 10 June 2010 it received a letter from Iran objecting to the designation of two IAEA safeguards inspectors.
"The IAEA has full confidence in the professionalism and impartiality of the inspectors concerned. The Agency confirms that its report on the implementation of safeguards in Iran, issued on 31 May 2010, is fully accurate.
"The IAEA will continue to monitor the situation carefully and keep Member States informed as appropriate."
Lire la suite →IAEA Receives Letters on Iran Fuel Supply from France, Russia and U.S.
IAEA Director General Yukiya Amano today informed the Board of Governors that he had received letters from the Governments of France, the Russian Federation and the United States concerning the provision of nuclear fuel for the Tehran Research Reactor.
The letters were in response to Iran′s 24 May letter officially agreeing to the Joint Declaration signed in Tehran last month by the Governments of Iran, Brazil and Turkey.
Attached to each of the letters was an identical paper entitled Concerns about the Joint Declaration Conveyed by Iran to the IAEA.

The IAEA is partnering with Roche, a leader in oncology, to address the growing cancer epidemic in sub-Saharan Africa. As the cancer burden increases in developing countries, there is a major need for more healthcare professionals, hospitals and treatment facilities. To address the issue, Roche and the IAEA are working together to support the training of medical staff across the continent.

In preparation for the EURO 2012 football championship, Finland will hand over a state-of-the-art radiation detection vehicle to the IAEA at a ceremony in Vienna on Thursday, 22 April.
The Sophisticated On-Site Nuclide Identification (SONNI) van will be used by Ukraine as part of nuclear security measures ahead of the championship, to be held jointly by Poland and Ukraine in 2012.
