In a recent Panel Discussion on “Workforce Development” organised by RemPlex/PNNL-USA in cooperation with the IAEA-Environet Network, six panellists, all senior professionals from USA, Portugal, and IAEA, showcased initiatives being taken in their organisations to support workforce development. Points such as existing workforce issues in the industry, root causes for specific gaps, and ways to collaborate on workforce development initiatives were discussed providing good insights on all these aspects above. It became apparent, however, that this conversation needed to be developed further, particularly giving voice to young professionals to better understand their motivations in choosing a career path, the challenges they face(d) in their education process; and in finding job placement in the market. Particular attention should be given to how and to what extent different programs, such as internships with organizations like the IAEA, have helped them to prepare themselves for the market.
