Technical Meeting on Gap Analysis of Environmental Technologies in Environmental Remediation
Objectives
The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) will hold a Technical Meeting on Gap Analysis of Environmental Technologies in Environmental Remediation at the Vienna International Centre, Vienna, Austria, from 13 to 17 October 2025. Virtual attendance is available.
Effectiveness in lowering risk, applicability to contamination, cost, and local availability are factors that are important when choosing a remediation technique or technology, according to the IAEA NE-Series report NW-T-3.6 "Lessons Learnt from Environmental Remediation Programmes," which was published in 2014. To assist decision makers in applying this knowledge to upcoming projects, the publication compiled lessons learnt from the application of some of the technologies and methodologies frequently utilised in remediation programs.
While some problems still exist, new technologies and procedures have been created in the ten years since the above study was published. Other issues, such the necessity of resilient remediation methods because of the effects of climate change, have been recognised.
The purpose of the event is to review the technologies used in environmental remediation, analyse their performance and identify gaps that may require innovative technologies and approaches to address remediation targets, improve cost effectiveness and enhance stakeholder acceptance.
This technical meeting is open to representatives of national and international organizations concerned with Environmental Remediation. The IAEA encourages participants to give presentations on the work of their respective institutions that falls under the topics listed in the Information Sheet.
The IAEA is generally not able to bear the travel and other costs of participants in the event. The IAEA has, however, limited funds at its disposal to help meet the cost of attendance of certain participants. Upon specific request, such assistance may be offered to normally one participant per country, provided that, in the IAEA’s view, the participant will make an important contribution to the event, such as through the acceptance of an abstract to present at the meeting.
The designation deadline is 8 August 2025.
