IAEA Redesignates French Institute of Science and Nuclear Techniques as Collaborating Centre for Education and Training

The IAEA and CEA, through INSTN, have maintained a longstanding partnership in nuclear education and training. Since 2016, INSTN has worked closely with several IAEA departments, supporting initiatives such as the Internet Reactor Laboratory and regional training programmes. Cooperation broadened in 2021 with three dedicated work plans in nuclear applications, energy and safety, paving the way for the expanded 2025–2029 agreement.

During the 2021–2025 designation period, INSTN introduced training platforms for reactor safety and radiation protection, such as the EVOC Nuclear Experience mixed-reality system and the OSIRIS simulator, while expanding laboratory infrastructure with new flow-loop simulators, gloveboxes and hot cells. INSTN also launched radiopharmacy summer schools and train-the-trainer initiatives; provided specialized training on nuclear forensics, safeguards and radioactive waste management; and supported the IAEA’s Rays of Hope initiative through fellowships for medical physicists and radiopharmacists. 

In 2024, INSTN organized a Regional Research Reactor School in France, offering students hands-on experience in reactor fundamentals and exposure to the latest developments in research reactor operation and training. 

The collaboration supported IAEA technical cooperation projects in Europe, Africa and Asia, while also advancing gender equality through support to the Maria Sklodowska-Curie Fellowship Programme. Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, INSTN maintained a high level of delivery by rapidly adopting digital and hybrid learning methods, demonstrating both resilience and adaptability.

Under the renewed designation, INSTN will continue to serve as a key institution for human resource development and knowledge management in the nuclear field.

The IAEA collaborates with designated institutions worldwide to promote the peaceful use of nuclear technologies. Through the Collaborating Centres network, these organizations assist the IAEA by undertaking original research and development and training in nuclear science and technology and their safe and secure applications.
