Low level waste is disposed in near surface disposal facilities. Intermediate level waste may be solidified in concrete or bitumen for disposal in shallow repositories. High level waste, other than spent nuclear fuel, is disposed of through deep burial. Currently, spent nuclear fuel is stored in spent fuel ponds or dry storage casts near nuclear power plants.
