Decomissioning is a series of actions taken to remove some or all the regulations imposed on a nuclear or radiological facility so that the facility and site can be reused. This process is a normal part of any facilities lifetime and planning for it must be done at the initial stages of a facilities lifetime. Before authorization every facility must have a decommissioning plan in place to demonstrate the feasibility and cost allocations for decommissioning. This plan must cover aspects such as worker protection, public safety, facility dismantling, waste management for both radioactive and non-radioactive material and environmental impacts.
