          Press Arrangements for IAEA One-Day Board of Governors Meeting , 6 October 2008

          The 35-member IAEA Board of Governors will convene a regular meeting at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, 6 October 2008, in the IAEA Boardroom, C04, in the Agency′s Headquarters, Vienna International Centre.

          The meeting will take up resolutions and decisions from the IAEA General Conference which concluded on the weekend. The board will elect a Chairman and two Vice-Chairmen.

          Eleven new board members will be participating for the first time.

          The meeting is closed to the press.

          New Nuclear Materials Security Organization News Conference Launch At IAEA General Conference

          Former Senator Sam Nunn, Co-Chairman of the Nuclear Threat Iniative (NTI), IAEA Director General Mohamed ElBaradei, and Secretary Samuel Bodman, United States Department of Energy, will participate in a news conference, Monday, 29 September, at 14.00, to launch the World Institute for Nuclear Security (WINS). The event will be held in the main foyer of the Austria Centre Vienna (ACV).

          The new international organization - based in Vienna - will work to strengthen the physical protection and security of nuclear materials and facilities worldwide.

          Press Arrangements for IAEA General Conference 29 September - 4 October 2008, Austria Centre, Vienna, Austria

          Senior representatives from 145 member states of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) will meet at the Austria Centre in Vienna on Monday, 29 September, for the five-day IAEA annual General Conference to discuss major topics on the organization′s agenda.

          All plenary sessions of the General Conference and the Scientific Forum will be open to the press.

          The IAEA Board of Governors will convene a regular meeting at the Agency′s Headquarters at 10:30 on Monday, 22 September 2008, in the IAEA Boardroom, C04, in the Vienna International Centre.

          Director General Mohamed ElBaradei will open the meeting with an introductory statement. His statement will be released to journalists after delivery and posted on the IAEA website the same day.

          IAEA to Host International Symposium on Induced Mutations in Plants

          The world is facing a food and energy crisis that threatens to drive tens of millions of people into hunger and poverty. A scientific technique that dramatically improves crop productivity could be part of the solution.

          More than 600 scientists, researchers and plant breeders from around the world will attend an International Symposium on Induced Mutations in Plants (ISIM), 12-15 August 2008, at the International Atomic Energy Agency headquarters in Vienna. The symposium will focus on the latest innovations and how they can improve crop varieties in the future.

          IAEA Director General Mohamed ElBaradei and Christopher Hill, U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for East Asian and Pacific Affairs, will meet on Friday, 25 July 2008, at the IAEA Headquarters.

          There will be a photo opportunity at 10:30 at the start of their meeting. Photographers and camera crews should gather at the bottom of the A Tower, VIC, by 10:15.

          Only photographers and camera crews will be admitted.

          Following the meeting, Mr. Hill will address all accredited media at the designated press area near the bottom of the A Tower.

          IAEA to Coordinate Major Exercise to Test Nuclear Accident Response

          The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) will coordinate a major exercise to test the response to a simulated accident at Mexico′s Laguna Verde nuclear power plant starting tomorrow, 9 July 2008.

          74 IAEA Member States and 10 international organizations will join the 48-hour drill to evaluate national and international preparedness for a possible nuclear or radiological emergency.

          As this will only be a "virtual" nuclear accident, the exercise will not pose any risk to the public or the environment.

          IAEA to Gather Experts to Discuss Seismic Safety of Nuclear Power Plants

          An international workshop to be held in Japan from 19-21 June will examine the issue of nuclear installations affected by strong earthquakes.

          The IAEA-organised workshop entitled Seismic Safety of Nuclear Power Plants - Lessons Learned from Strong Earthquakes will gather more than 50 international specialists who will share lessons learned and good practices related to effects of earthquakes on nuclear power plants. The event will take place in the Japanese city of Kashiwazaki, which was the site of a strong earthquake in July 2007.
