An innovative approach to breaking barriers in radiation applications: IAEA Transportable Electron Beam System.
Irradiation facilities play, directly or indirectly, a significant role in the Member States’ development goals. The IAEA’s Transportable Electron Beam (e-beam) System will serve as a cornerstone of the innovative approach to breaking barriers in radiation applications.
The IAEA’s new Transportable E-beam System is versatile: it can treat liquid, gaseous and solid materials, enabling the development of safer and higher quality products and processes.
e-beams to support IAEA activities
Research and development activities conducted in the e-beam system will support IAEA work in areas as diverse as:
- NUTEC Plastics (upcycling of plastic waste and production of bio-based plastics)
- Atoms4Food (ensuring food safety and avoiding plant pest dissemination)
- ZODIAC (inactivating microorganisms for the creation of vaccines)
- Atoms4Climate (wastewater, sludge, odour, greenhouse gases treatments)
- Cultural Heritage Preservation?(preserving cultural heritage artefacts)
In addition, the system will be used for training events for Member States representatives in the safety aspects, operation and proper use of e-beam irradiation, and for demonstrations.
Transportable Electron Beam System components
The system is made up of two standard ISO shipping containers. The 40-feet long container houses the control room, the electron accelerator and its lead shielding, which makes it weigh 31-tonnes. The 20-feet long, 12 tonne heavy second container houses auxiliary equipment.
