From Career Opportunities to Mentors: How to Increase the Role of Women in the Nuclear Sector
The nuclear sector lacks female professionals and managers, and only through offering appealing career paths and strong mentoring will the sector attract more women. The importance of developing a workforce pipeline that includes women was the topic of the round table event ‘Women in All Things Nuclear – The Future Workforce,’ held on the margins of the 59th IAEA General Conference today. Discussions centred on how to attract students and young female professionals to the nuclear field, and how to retain them.

Africa’s Energy Needs and the Potential Role of Nuclear Power
An increasing number of developing countries, including in Africa, are interested in adding nuclear power in their energy mix, the audience of an IAEA side event to the 59th IAEA General Conference heard today.
“Access to nuclear power, technically and financially, is no longer limited to advanced economies,” said IAEA Director General Yukiya Amano, at the event. “More than 30 Member States are preparing or considering nuclear power programmes. Most of them are developing countries. Around a third of them are in Africa.”

Identifying the stage of cancer quickly and accurately will become easier for health care professionals in developing countries, thanks to an IAEA-developed smartphone app launched today.
Staging cancer is a complex process, involving the integration of the results of a wide range of tests. Based on this diagnosis, physicians decide on whether surgery, radiotherapy, chemotherapy or any other form of treatment is most appropriate.??
