Promoting Strong and Independent Regulation
Senior nuclear regulators met on 25 September 2014 in Vienna, Austria, on the margins of the 58th IAEA General Conference to discuss issues central to creating more adaptive and robust nuclear regulation.
IAEA Director General Yukiya Amano opened the meeting by emphasizing the importance of a properly established legal and regulatory framework in order to ensure continued nuclear safety and nuclear security. "Improving nuclear safety is an issue that will never cease to require our attention and regulators play an essential role," he said.

Recent years have witnessed remarkable development in the field of nuclear medicine-hybrid imaging techniques, novel analysis methods, and computed tomography procedures have been broadly adopted by medical facilities around the world. Similarly, there has been an attendant growth in the awareness that the safe management and use of radiation in medicine depends on the presence of well-trained medical professionals. While IAEA Member States have made noteworthy investments in nuclear medicine, gaps in expertise remain, especially in low- and middle-income countries (LMIC).

IAEA Supports the Building of Nuclear Power Infrastructures
Building sustainable nuclear power infrastructure was the focus of presentations by delegates from newcomer countries, Kenya, Malaysia and Turkey, at a side event held on 24 September 2014 on the margins of the annual IAEA General Conference.
The speakers from these three countries shared their experiences on how to tailor and make best use of the IAEA's services to support the development of their national nuclear power infrastructures. Kenya, Malaysia and Turkey are at different stages of developing their national nuclear power infrastructure.

Celebrating 15 Years of Nuclear Safety Harmonization in Europe
The Western European Nuclear Regulators Association (WENRA) has over the last 15 years worked to harmonize nuclear safety among its participating Member States in the European region. To mark 15 years since WENRA's inception, a side event was held on the margins of the IAEA?58th General Conference?on 24 September 2014 that highlighted the achievements and the future goals of the association.
