          Description

To mark the release of the IAEA report Coal to Nuclear: Supporting a Clean Energy Transition — developed for South Africa’s 2025 G20 Presidency — the IAEA is hosting a webinar on the potential of transforming former coal plant sites into clean energy hubs powered by nuclear technology. Drawing on insights from the report, the webinar will explore the macro- and socioeconomic benefits of coal-to-nuclear projects and highlight how coal-to-nuclear transitions can deliver unique opportunities to advance climate targets, while reinforcing energy security and fostering inclusive economic growth. The discussion will cover job creation, community benefits, and policy considerations, alongside financing strategies that align climate action with long-term socioeconomic development.

Building on previous IAEA engagements, this webinar extends the dialogue on these topics by providing Member States and stakeholders with up-to-date insights on how nuclear energy can support a clean, secure and just energy transition.

          Objectives

          • Explore strategies for ensuring a just transition for workers and communities affected by coal-fired power plant closures.
          • Examine policy, workforce, and community considerations for coal-to-nuclear initiatives and projects.
          • Discuss financing models and approaches that align clean energy investment with long-term economic growth.
          • Learn from case studies and insights from the IAEA’s Coal to Nuclear: Supporting a Clean and Just Energy Transition G20 publication.
