The Albert Schweitzer International University in Spain has awarded the IAEA its annual Gold Medal for Science and Peace, citing the Agency's key contributions to world peace and disarmament.
The University is supported by professors from around the world, inspired by the search for peace and disarmament. It brings together institutions worldwide, coordinating courses, seminars and conferences grounded in the life and philosophy of Nobel Laureate Albert Schweitzer. The Honorary President of the University is Rhena Schweitzer-Miller, the distinguished scientist's daughter.
The award was presented to the IAEA at a ceremony in Vienna, Austria, 17 December 2003, attended by Ms. Schweitzer-Miller and other dignitaries. IAEA Deputy Director General Mr. David Waller accepted the award on the IAEA's behalf.
Throughout the past year, the work of the IAEA and Dr. ElBaradei has been widely recognized through the Agency's leading international role in verifying nuclear programmes in Iraq and other countries. Earlier this year, the IAEA received a Peace Award from the Goi Foundation in Japan, and was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize and the European Union's Sakharov Prize.
