          About the Webinar

This webinar is a joint webinar organized by the IAEA and African Alara Network (AFAN). In this webinar, Dr. López will discuss the general principles of internal dosimetry, criteria for the monitoring of internal exposures and methods for individual monitoring and workplace monitoring directly or indirectly.

Intake of radioactive material into body by inhalation, ingestion, injection or by absorption through intact skin or a wound can be leaded to internal exposures either for workers, member of the public and patients. Doses from intakes of radionuclides cannot be measured directly, they may be assessed from measurements of:

          • the activity content in total body or in organs of the body
          • the activity in excreta samples?
          • the airborne radionuclide concentration or by a combination of these methods

IAEA General Safety Requirements (GSR Part 3) and IAEA General Safety Guide (GSG-7) set out the requirements and guidance, respectively, with regard to the monitoring and recoding of occupational exposure including internal exposure dosimetry for workers, public and patients. The regulatory body shall establish and enforce requirements for the monitoring and recording of occupational exposures in planned exposure situations.

          Learning objectives

Participants of the webinar will learn about:

          • General principles of internal dosimetry
          • Criteria for the monitoring of internal exposures
          • Direct monitoring methods of internal dosimetry: In vivo monitoring of radionuclides
          • Indirect monitoring methods of internal dosimetry:? In vitro measurements of biological samples
