On 29 January 2013, IAEA Director General Yukiya Amano visited the construction site of the Barakah Nuclear Power Plant in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). The UAE is the first country in 27 years to build its first Nuclear Power Plant. The first unit of the Plant, which is situated 240 kilometres west of the capital Abu Dhabi, is due to be operational in 2017. Speaking at the site, the Director General said he was impressed with what he had seen and said the IAEA will continue to support the UAE's nuclear power programme.
