IAEA to Gather Experts to Discuss Seismic Safety of Nuclear Power Plants

          2008/09

An international workshop to be held in Japan from 19-21 June will examine the issue of nuclear installations affected by strong earthquakes.

The IAEA-organised workshop entitled Seismic Safety of Nuclear Power Plants - Lessons Learned from Strong Earthquakes will gather more than 50 international specialists who will share lessons learned and good practices related to effects of earthquakes on nuclear power plants. The event will take place in the Japanese city of Kashiwazaki, which was the site of a strong earthquake in July 2007.

All sessions of the three-day event will be open to the media.

The IAEA workshop is organised in cooperation with the Nuclear Energy Agency of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD/NEA), and is hosted by Japan′s Nuclear and Industrial Safety Agency (NISA), Nuclear Safety Commission (NSC) and the Japan Nuclear Energy Safety Organization (JNES).
