Nuclear Technologies for the Environment: Protecting Earth, Air and Oceans

In the early years of the IAEA, the need for accurate, scientific data to support the work of this Agency quickly became apparent. In 1964, on the advice of the International Nuclear Data Scientific Working Group (INDSWG) to the then IAEA Director General, Sigvard Eklund, the Nuclear Data Unit (NDU; later known as the Nuclear Data Section) was formed and has since worked under the guidance of the INDSWG (that later would come to be known as the International Nuclear Data Committee (INDC)).

Nuclear Data Section (NDS) Through the Years

Data are distinct pieces of information that represent the values of various scientific quantities. Data can be produced from experiments or calculations and are refined through contributions from people around the world. By combining data into organised and formatted files and libraries, accurate and complete descriptions of scientific or technological processes can be made. The IAEA helps Member States develop the required human resources to support operating, new and expanding nuclear power programmes, and organizes numerous capacity building and training events each year.

IAEA Technical Cooperation Programme

Kwaku Aning, Deputy Director General and Head of the Department of Technical Cooperation, IAEA, paid an official visit to Myanmar, on 19-22 March 2013. Joining him was Ali Boussaha, Director of the TC Division for Asia and the Pacific.

During the trip, Mr. Aning delivered a speech to the national representatives attending the 35th Meeting of the Regional Cooperative Agreement for Research, Development and Training Related to Nuclear Science and Technology for Asia and the Pacific (RCA), an annual event which promotes science and development.
