Large, bustling cities are home to billions around world. In them, people often congregate in dense crowds, for example during rush hour. Security experts, including those focusing on nuclear security, work hard to deter any threats to these vital centres, and to ensure that authorities are ready to handle security-related emergencies. The IAEA supports Member States in work to integrate nuclear security applications in major urban areas, for example through workshops.

Nuclear Security in Big Cities

<p>The Postgraduate Educational Course in Radiation Protection and the Safety of Radiation Sources (PGEC) celebrates its 100th edition this year.</p>

<p>In its 37 years of existence, the course helped 120 countries build radiation safety knowledge of young graduates from Africa, Asia and the Pacific, Europe and Latin American and the Caribbean. </p>

How much will these children from the Eastern Philippines know about nuclear science and technology when they graduate from high school?

Quite a bit – according to new plans by the Philippine Nuclear Research Institute (PNRI) of the Department of Science and Technology and the country's Department of Education, who are working on rolling out a nuclear science and technology education programme that has been piloted in selected schools in the capital region.
<br /><br />
The teaching material and its lesson exemplars were developed as part of an IAEA technical cooperation project involving several countries across Asia.

Hands-on Training for Safety Regulators: An Insight into IAEA Support

While the visible impact of large plastic debris on marine environments has been well documented, the potential harm caused by microplastics is much less clear. Nuclear and isotopic techniques can provide valuable information on their impact and the risk to marine organisms and, ultimately, humans. This information can be used by governments as input into making policy decisions.
