Tackling Tuwaitha's Radioactive Ruins

In Russian and Ukrainian, the word “Chernobyl” means black weed and is a member of the wormwood family. The Ukrainian city of Chernobyl was so named after the abundance of this weed growing in and around the city. The grass, which has a characteristic bitter taste and smell, is said to have natural repellent properties and many believed wormwood to have supernatural banishing powers.

Saving the Source of Chocolate

In health care, the double-edged sword of radiation can be used to fight cancer and scope out signs of disease... under strict controls and in the right hands. In Prague, Czech Republic, Dr. Josef Novotný, a medical physicist, works to make sure that patients are correctly and safely treated at Na Homolce Hospital. He checks and calibrates equipment, and conducts training in radiation safety under an IAEA-supported project.

The Dose That Saves

Photo 1 of 14 : The small shops and markets along the road to Cu Chi village, a rice farming community several hours outside of Ho Chi Minh City in South Vietnam. The village is the site of fields where new varieties of rice are being grown developed in cooperation with South Vietnam's Institute of Agricultural Science. Water for 30 Cents a Barrel

Families in this small hamlet of Bac Ninh Province have been living off the land and rice farming for centuries. Training the Nuclear Watchdogs

Long before arriving on site, novice and seasoned inspectors alike take part in rigorous training. It kicks off with classroom exercises and lectures before inspectors take their knowledge to the field. The IAEA organizes about 50 training exercises each year, for up to 12 inspectors at a time.
